BugStop does not work exactly like a chemical repellent. For one, it takes about 60 seconds for the heat of your body to begin evaporating the essential oils from your skin. Also, especially at the beginning, it sometimes needs to be reapplied to build up enough smell to deter bugs. BugStop is not a miracle product, it does a good job in a healthy way.

60 seconds
It can take up to 60 seconds for the heat of your skin to begin evaporating the oils to create a zone that sandflies do not like. 60 seconds is a long time if sandflies are hassling you. If possible apply it one minute before leaving the tent, car, house or shelter and entering the "sandfly" zone.

Reapply
Near the end of essential oil evaporation, sandflies may again begin to land on your skin, but will not bite. This is your signal to reapply. Frequent application of small amounts of BugStop provides the best protection from sandflies and mosquitoes.
Depending upon the severity of the sandflies and a variety of weather and activity factors this may be as often as every 20 minutes, but most often every hour or two.
